What are add-backs?

Add-backs are legitimate expenses in your accounts that a new owner wouldn't carry — added back to profit to show the true earning power of the business. The most common are:

  • Owner's salary — what you pay yourself above (or below) a market-rate manager's wage.
  • Owner perks — personal costs run through the business: vehicle, travel, phone, insurances, memberships, family wages.
  • Interest — loan and finance interest tied to the current owner's funding, not the operation itself.

Add these together and enter the total. This turns reported profit into owner-adjusted earnings (PEBITDA) — the figure buyers value.

Lower owner-dependence = lower risk for a buyer = a higher multiple.

Where you price changes how fast you sell

Faster sale Higher value $— $—
Priced toward the lower end — you widen the buyer pool, attract more competitive interest and typically sell faster, often with a cleaner, lower-risk deal.
Priced toward the higher end — you're targeting the right strategic buyer who sees full value. That can mean a materially better price, but a longer process and a narrower field of qualified acquirers.
